Not everyone dreams of a big wedding.
For some couples, the perfect wedding looks more like a few favourite people gathered in the garden, a glass of champagne afterwards and perhaps a lovely lunch or dinner together.
No elaborate seating plan. No complicated schedule. And no pressure to turn the day into something bigger than you actually want.
And the good news? You can absolutely get legally married at home in Sydney.
I'm Charlotte, an authorised marriage celebrant based in Rouse Hill in Sydney's Hills District, and I love helping couples create simple, relaxed wedding ceremonies that feel personal and meaningful.
Whether you're planning a backyard wedding in Castle Hill, an intimate ceremony in Kellyville or something small at home elsewhere in Sydney, here's what you need to know.
1. Can You Legally Get Married at Home in NSW?
Absolutely.
You don't need to get married in a church, registry office or dedicated wedding venue to have a legally recognised marriage in Australia.
You can choose your own home, a family member's garden or another suitable private location, provided you have permission to use the space.
The important part isn't where you get married. It's that the ceremony meets the legal requirements.
For most couples, that means having:
An authorised marriage celebrant.
Two witnesses who are both at least 18 years old.
A completed Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM).
The legally required wording and declarations during the ceremony.
The necessary marriage documents signed and lodged.
And that's it. There's no legal requirement for a bridal party, elaborate decorations or a large guest list.
You can have a perfectly lovely wedding with just the two of you, your celebrant and two witnesses.
2. How Many People Do You Need for a Small Wedding?
For a legal marriage in Australia, you'll need five people present:
You, your partner, your celebrant and two adult witnesses.
Of course, you're welcome to invite more people if you'd like.
Some couples choose to have just their parents or closest friends. Others invite twenty or thirty people for a relaxed garden celebration.
There's no minimum guest list beyond the legal requirements, and no need to make it a bigger event than you want.
If you don't have suitable witnesses available, let your celebrant know early so you can discuss possible arrangements.
3. What Does a Simple Wedding at Home Cost in Sydney?
One of the advantages of a small wedding at home is that you can keep costs manageable.
You don't need to pay for an expensive venue, extensive decorations or a full reception unless you want to.
At CLS Celebrant, my simple wedding ceremonies start from $500.
This includes a relaxed ceremony, the required legal marriage paperwork and registration with NSW Births, Deaths & Marriages.
If you'd prefer something more personalised, with a longer ceremony, your story woven into the wording or additional equipment, I also offer personalised wedding ceremonies from $650.
Travel fees may apply depending on the location.
And remember, you don't need to spend thousands to make the day special.
A few flowers, somewhere comfortable to stand, your favourite people and a ceremony that feels right for you can be more than enough.
4. How Long Does a Simple Wedding Ceremony Take?
A simple wedding ceremony can be surprisingly short.
For couples who want to keep things straightforward, a ceremony of around 10–15 minutes can work beautifully.
That gives us time for a warm welcome, the legally required wording, an exchange of vows and the signing of the marriage documents.
If you'd like to include a little more of your story, personal vows or a reading, we can make it longer.
There's no need to fill time simply because it's a wedding.
The ceremony should be as long — or as short — as feels right for you, while meeting the legal requirements.
5. What Paperwork Do You Need to Get Married at Home?
The legal process is the same whether you're getting married at home, at a vineyard or at a large wedding venue.
The first step is completing a Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM).
This must generally be given to your authorised marriage celebrant at least one calendar month before your wedding date, and no more than 18 months beforehand.
You'll also need to provide the appropriate identification and evidence of your date and place of birth. If either of you has been married previously, you'll need evidence that the previous marriage has ended.
Your celebrant will guide you through the paperwork and arrange the other required legal declarations and marriage documents.
After your wedding, your celebrant will lodge the marriage documents with NSW Births, Deaths & Marriages.
If you need an official marriage certificate for changing your name or other administrative purposes, that can be ordered separately through NSW BDM.
It might sound like a lot, but it's actually quite straightforward when someone is guiding you through it.
6. Making a Wedding at Home Feel Special
A small wedding doesn't have to feel like a compromise.
In fact, being somewhere familiar can make the ceremony feel even more personal.
You might choose to exchange vows beneath a favourite tree in the garden, in your living room surrounded by family photographs, or on the patio where you usually sit together at the end of the day.
You don't need an elaborate wedding arch or professional styling.
A few simple touches can make a lovely difference:
Fresh flowers from a local florist or your own garden.
A small table for signing the marriage documents.
A favourite piece of music before or after the ceremony.
Champagne and a beautiful cake to share afterwards.
A relaxed lunch or dinner with the people you love.
And if you'd rather skip all of that and simply get married, that's absolutely fine too.
The most important part of the day is the commitment you're making to each other.
Everything else is optional.
7. Do You Have to Write Your Own Wedding Vows?
Not at all.
Some couples love the idea of writing personal vows. Others find the thought of speaking in front of people a little daunting.
Both are completely normal.
There are certain legal words that need to be said during an Australian marriage ceremony, but beyond those requirements, we have flexibility to make the ceremony feel like you.
You can write your own vows, choose from some simple wording or keep things very straightforward.
As your celebrant, I'll help you find something that feels comfortable and genuine.
You don't have to become a poet overnight.
8. What If It Rains on Your Wedding Day?
One of the best things about getting married at home is that your backup plan can be wonderfully simple.
If you're planning to marry in the garden and the weather doesn't cooperate, you can often move the ceremony indoors or under cover.
Just make sure there's enough space for the two of you, your witnesses and your celebrant, with somewhere suitable to sign the documents.
If you're inviting guests, it's also worth thinking about shade, seating and whether everyone will be able to hear.
For smaller ceremonies, a PA system often isn't necessary, particularly in a quiet setting.
For larger gatherings, a microphone can make a real difference.
9. Can You Get Married at Home in the Hills District?
Absolutely — and it's something I particularly enjoy helping couples with.
I'm based in Rouse Hill and offer simple and personalised wedding ceremonies throughout Sydney's Hills District, including Castle Hill, Kellyville, North Kellyville, Baulkham Hills, Bella Vista, Norwest, Dural and surrounding areas.
I also travel across greater Sydney and selected regional NSW locations.
Whether you're planning a small ceremony in your backyard, a relaxed gathering at a family home or an intimate celebration at a local venue, I can help make the process easy and enjoyable.
10. Your Wedding, Your Way
There's something rather lovely about a wedding that doesn't try to be anything other than what it is.
Two people choosing to get married.
A few meaningful words.
The people who matter most.
And perhaps a glass of something lovely afterwards.
You don't need a grand entrance, a perfectly styled venue or an enormous budget to have a wedding you'll remember.
You just need a ceremony that feels right for you.
And sometimes, the simplest weddings are the ones that feel the most special.
