Planning a Wedding in Sydney's Hills District? A Local Celebrant's Guide

There's something lovely about getting married close to home. No complicated travel plans, no need to make a whole weekend of it (unless you want to), and the freedom to celebrate somewhere that already feels familiar.

Here in Sydney's Hills District, we're rather spoilt for choice. From leafy gardens and beautiful outdoor spaces to intimate restaurants, private properties and established wedding venues, there are plenty of ways to create a wedding that feels completely your own.

I'm Charlotte, a marriage celebrant based in Rouse Hill, and I love helping couples create ceremonies that are relaxed, personal and meaningful — without feeling overly formal or unnecessarily complicated.

If you're planning a wedding in Castle Hill, Kellyville, Dural, Rouse Hill or anywhere across the Hills District, here are a few things worth considering.

1. Your Wedding Doesn't Have to Be a Big Production

One of the things I love most about being a marriage celebrant is that no two couples want exactly the same thing.

Some dream of a beautiful garden ceremony surrounded by family and friends. Others would much rather exchange vows at home with a handful of people they love, followed by a lovely lunch or dinner.

And both are equally special.

A small wedding doesn't mean you have to compromise on the experience. In fact, some of the most meaningful ceremonies are the simplest.

Whether you're planning an intimate wedding in Castle Hill, a relaxed backyard ceremony in Kellyville or a larger celebration in Dural, the most important thing is that it feels right for you.

Not what tradition says you should do. Not what everyone else expects.

Just you, your partner and a ceremony that reflects your relationship.

2. Choosing Where to Get Married in the Hills District

One of the advantages of getting married in the Hills District is the variety of settings available.

Castle Hill and Baulkham Hills offer plenty of established venues, restaurants, gardens and private spaces for couples wanting a ceremony and celebration close to home.

Rouse Hill and Kellyville are wonderful options for relaxed weddings, particularly if you're considering a ceremony at home or a smaller gathering with family and friends.

Dural, Kenthurst and Glenorie offer a more rural feel, with beautiful greenery, open spaces and countryside settings that can make an outdoor ceremony feel especially lovely.

And if you're happy to venture a little further, Windsor and the Hawkesbury have some beautiful historic and riverside settings.

Before booking an outdoor location, it's worth checking whether permission is required, what happens if it rains, whether there's enough shade and how easily your guests can access the ceremony area.

A beautiful setting is wonderful, but somewhere your guests can comfortably hear your vows is just as important.

3. Make the Ceremony Personal, Not Just Formal

Your ceremony is the part of the day where you actually get married, so it deserves a little thought.

But personal doesn't have to mean long, sentimental or overly serious.

It might mean including the story of how you met, a funny moment from your relationship, a few words about the people who matter most, or simply making sure the ceremony sounds like the two of you.

Some couples love writing their own vows. Others would rather keep things simple and have a little help with the wording.

There's no right or wrong approach.

My job as your celebrant is to get to know you both, understand what you're comfortable with and create something that feels genuine.

And if you're not particularly keen on being the centre of attention, that's absolutely fine too. We can keep things relaxed, natural and without any unnecessary fuss.

4. What Does a Marriage Celebrant Cost in the Hills District?

Wedding ceremonies come in all shapes and sizes, and your celebrant fee will usually depend on how much personalisation, preparation and equipment you need.

At CLS Celebrant, I offer:

Simple wedding ceremonies from $500

Perfect for couples looking for a short, relaxed ceremony at home or another intimate setting, with the legal requirements taken care of and a personal touch.

Personalised wedding ceremonies from $650

For couples wanting a more individually written ceremony, with time to tell their story, incorporate personal vows or readings, and include PA equipment where needed.

Both options include the required legal marriage paperwork and registration with NSW Births, Deaths & Marriages.

Travel fees may apply for locations further afield.

I believe you should be able to have a lovely, meaningful wedding ceremony without feeling you need to spend a fortune or make it more elaborate than you want.

5. Don't Forget the Legal Paperwork

This is the less romantic part of getting married, but fortunately it's straightforward when you know what's involved.

In Australia, you'll need to complete a Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) and give it to your authorised marriage celebrant at least one calendar month before your wedding, and no more than 18 months beforehand.

You'll also need to provide the appropriate identity documents and, if either of you has been married before, evidence that the previous marriage has ended.

As your celebrant, I'll guide you through the paperwork, explain what's required and make sure everything is completed correctly.

You don't need to work it all out yourselves.

6. A Few Tips for an Outdoor Wedding

The Hills District is beautiful in spring and summer, but Sydney weather can be unpredictable.

If you're planning an outdoor wedding, a few practical details can make all the difference.

Think about the time of day, particularly if you're getting married in the warmer months. Late-afternoon ceremonies can offer softer light and more comfortable temperatures.

Have a wet-weather option, even if it's simply moving the ceremony under cover.

Consider whether you'll need a microphone or speaker so everyone can hear, particularly if you're inviting a larger group.

And give yourselves a little breathing room in the schedule. You don't want to spend your ceremony worrying about whether you're running five minutes late.

The best ceremonies feel relaxed because the important details have already been taken care of.

7. Remember, It's Your Day

It's very easy to get caught up in all the things you're supposed to do when planning a wedding.

But you don't need a huge guest list, elaborate decorations or a perfectly choreographed ceremony to have a beautiful wedding.

You can get married in your own garden.

You can invite twenty people or two hundred.

You can write heartfelt vows, keep things light-hearted, include family traditions or do something entirely different.

The important thing is that when you look back on your wedding day, you remember enjoying it.

Not just organising it.
